Why don’t we take better care protecting our skin from the sun?

Teaching good skin care, especially if it hasn’t been a practice before can be a tricky thing but I am not beneath asking for help. I have taken Rebecca to the dermatologist for mole checks and make sure that she wears sunscreen, especially when she’s in the pool. I have to admit, with all the activities going on in the summer, it is easy to leave the sun protection behind but the necessity of it has become all the more apparent.

These days, with so much of our ozone layer missing, being out in the sun is a lot more dangerous than it ever was before. Of course, these days it seems as though most everything is more dangerous. To combat the times we take special care to keep our kids and ourselves safer from stranger danger and other predators. We park our cars at night under lighted spaces and watch with special scrutiny any signs of identity theft or intrusion into our homes.

“Finally, benzoyl peroxide is really great as a spot treatment,” says Allen. “Apply it right on the blemish. The reason that it’s so great is it puts oxygen in the skin, and it exposes that blemish-causing bacteria so it literally dies.”

Style Sessions Tip: Sulphur is a great drying agent, and also helps diminish redness that often remains when a blemish heals. “I like a good sulphur mask when I have a breakout,” says Allen. “Then I spot treat with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid at night.”

Skin Issue: Redness & Blotchiness
“Redness is caused because capillaries are extremely close to the surface of the skin, and when we get flushed, the capillaries are expanding and opening allowing more blood to come through,” explains Allen. Therefore, the redness is literally blood near the surface of the skin.

Has medicine triumphed the visible aging process?

The stem-cell skin cream frenzy began last year when a Salt Lake City company called Voss Laboratories released its product, Amatokin, at Bloomingdale’s with the advertising slogan “Stem Cells: The future of skin rejuvenation.” It cost $190 for a 30-milliliter tube – about 1 ounce.

Then came other, equally enticing products and promises. Celebrity dermatologist Nicholas Perricone offered up StimulCell ($155 for a 1.7-ounce jar), and Dior began hawking Capture R60/80 XP ($80 per 1.7-ounce jar). Although none of the manufacturers say the products contain stem cells, the marketing materials are vague enough that consumers could easily think they were applying the cells to their skin. Capture, for example, claims to “utilize stem cell technology”; Amatokin says it’s “made up of stem cell activating properties.”

Stem cells, most notably found in the tissue of developing fetuses, have the ability to develop into many types of tissue.

Determining the cause of an itchy skin rash

The other common product that can cause a reaction is rubber (latex) so if you have been wearing rubber gloves they could be the cause of the problem.

I wear gloves when preparing sandwiches and rolls, so perhaps they are the cause. How can I know for sure?

The only way to accurately determine the cause of the reaction is to have a patch test carried out. This involves various substances being applied to the skin in order to find which one(s) you react to.

You should see your doctor who will recommend an anti-inflammatory cream containing hydrocortisone to help the rash.

Barrier creams and moisturisers such as E45 are also useful in preventing a recurrence of the problem.

Your doctor may refer you to a dermatologist for patch testing of the problem.
